Gulf Gate Community-Post Tropical Storm Debby
First and foremost, we hope that all of our Gulf Gate neighbors are safe and experienced minimal damage and flooding.
Tropical Storm Debby according to The National Weather Service reported Monday evening that Sarasota and Manatee counties had the two highest totals in a 14-county region, 16.56 inches in Lakewood Ranch, and 16.23 in Sarasota County, according to three-day observations. Many neighborhoods experience extensive flooding, especially those along Philippi Creek, Bahia Vista is one.
Some of our board members we out early yesterday to document the flooding throughout Gulf Gate. Unfortunately, some areas we not accessible, so we are asking that if you have any photos or video of the flooding to please share them with us via email at treasurer@ggca.us or you can upload them to https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/14hM6AmtV0qbK3b7E65n5E5lD_epDPxmn?usp=drive_link
We immediately sent a letter along with the photos were to Commissioner Neunder, Public Works and the Sarasota County Stormwater Agency requesting a meeting to express our concerns and review the approved site plan stormwater management system for the golf course development. The existing ponds in the golf course were out of their banks and in one case created a path of flooding to the street. FDEP, the 13th Floor Homes developers, our attorney and environmental consultant have been notified as well.

Flood safety tips
- Never walk or drive through floodwaters. It’s impossible to determine the depth of water, the condition of the road beneath, or any hazards present.
- Turn around, don’t drown. More than 50 percent of all flood-related fatalities involve vehicles. Be cautious of flooded roadways. Do not drive through standing water.
- Do not drive through flooded roads. Six inches of water will reach the bottom of most passenger cars causing loss of control and possible stalling. A foot of water will float many vehicles.
Do not open manhole covers
Opening manhole covers during a heavy rainfall event puts stress on our wastewater collection systems, which can lead to wastewater spills. If you notice any open manhole covers, please call 311.
