Coyotes in Gulf Gate

Coyote laying in the grass
By Dru Bloomfield (Urban Coyotes)

Dear Residents,

It has been reported that there have been multiple sightings of a Coyote in the Bounty Drive area of Gulf Gate. Over the many years I’ve lived in Gulf Gate, we have had recurring/annual sightings of Coyotes and I’ve seen them myself on several occasions in Gulf Gate, Gulf Gate Woods, Palmer Ranch, etc. Coyotes have a roam radius in miles, so they aren’t necessarily isolated to the area they are spotted and their intense stare can be unsettling sometimes. We’ve never had any reports of attacks, and reports nationally are very very rare. But, saying that, we always need to be vigilant with the natural wildlife we have. The best defense is to make sure our garbage cans are secure and that we are mindful of small pets and small children (which is always a good idea anyway). We live in an area where Raccoons, Opossums, Rabbits, Squirrels, Birds of Prey, and yes even Coyote are common. And, any freshwater body of water in Florida has the potential to see Alligators. So, vigilance and common sense is key.

What to do if you are engaged or confronted by a coyote

What about aggressive behavior?

If you see unusual or aggressive behavior from wildlife, you should always call the sheriff’s department who is equipped to dispatch animal services or state wildlife management officers to investigate.

If a wild animal is injured keep your distance and call one of the local wildlife rescue organizations.
