A Community of Good Neighbors!

We love our Gulf Gate/Gulf Gate Woods community, or we would not have chosen to live here, right?   We need a president.  Jim Muir stayed on this year because no one else threw his/her hat into the ring!   We are in serious need of a leader for this coming year and nominations must be presented before the November election.

What happens when we wait around for someone else to step up?  Nothing happens, because that someone else should have been YOU.

Jim is often asked - why haven’t we (we being the association) done this or that and when will this be taken care of and who cares about me, me, me??   A few people cannot keep taking care of the needs of so many.  It is just not possible - physically nor mentally.  Simple as that folks.  Remember, this is YOUR association – not just ours!

When a special issue (i.e. the golf course, the library, etc.) needs attention, many step forward to give their much-appreciated support.  BUT, please remember that we are a community in need year-round.

Of course, we want Gulf Gate/Gulf Gate Woods to be perfect – back to the days when cars weren’t parked on front lawns, boats and trailers and motor homes weren’t scattered around yards, when lawns and homes were taken care of with pride, and when deed restrictions really meant something.  People cared.  Let’s bring that feeling back.  It doesn’t take much.  We are not a gated community, nor one that only allows a few paint color choices, nor nit-picks every little thing.   We moved to a deed restricted community for a good reason, and it takes more than a few to maintain it!

So, with that said, here is what is needed:

1.  President: only presidential duties!!

2.  Newsletter: four issues a year – not a full-time commitment and you don’t write the newsletter - just put it together

3.  Membership: desperately needed energetic, full of ideas person – part time!

4.  Security patrol drivers: one hour a MONTH  -  everyone should at least volunteer for this job – there should be a waiting list!!!

5.  Deed restriction: extra people needed to monitor certain areas – not the entire community - or just assist

6.  Raffle: obtain donations i.e. gift certificates, etc. for each of the four general meetings – easy job!!

7.  Correspondence Secretary: letters, etc.  (not the minutes)

8.  Board members

No excuses!  We ALL have busy, hectic lives, but your Gulf Gate/Gulf Gate Woods community needs you!

One of our good neighbors Jamie Christison is now a hairstylist located at 2725 Mall Drive. Jamie is an active member for the Gulf Gate Association. You can support her by calling 941-323-6808 and asking about the special prices for community members.

Hello all -

Well, it was a 5-0 win for Gulf Gate.  The Sarasota County Commissioners voted unanimously against the rezoning of the golf course.

Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts to those who attended today's hearing (in force, by the way!) and supported Gulf Gate and Gulf Gate Woods.

Please remember to drop a check in the mail if you have not already paid your 2010 association membership dues (or visit the website  www.ggca.us   to pay them through PayPal.

Have a wonderful and safe 2010, and we hope to see you at the next general meeting on Tuesday, January 19th!

CONCERNING Golf Course Rezoning:

This is a VERY IMPORTANT reminder that this WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 13th at 1:30pm is when we present our case to the Sarasota County Commissioners against the rezoning of the Gulf Gate Golf Course.

When we went before the planning board in November, they were very impressed by the attendance of the Gulf Gate homeowners.  Now, we need to show an even larger presence before the county commissioners who have the final decision on the rezoning.

Please make every effort you can to attend the January 13th hearing.  The hearing will be at the SARASOTA COUNTY ADMINISTRATION CENTER - 1660 RINGLING BLVD, 1st FLOOR (on the south side of Ringling Blvd between Osprey and Orange Avenues).  Parking is available behind the building.

Please, please take our plea to heart and attend this hearing.  Remember, IF the property is rezoned, this will be the end of our beautiful and necessary green space!

Thank you, friends.  We'll see you this Wednesday!

Gulf Gate Community Association

We have scheduled a 2nd organizational meeting for January 6, 2010, 6:30 PM, Gulf Gate Library in the Meeting Room (adjacent to the Children's section of the library). The purpose of the meeting is to prepare for the County Commissioner's meeting scheduled for January 13, 2010, at the Ringling Building, 1660 Ringling Blvd., 1:30 PM, concerning Rezone Petition No. 09-05.

Our meeting agenda for January 6 is short, and will include being made aware persons who want to make a short presentation (probably limited to 3 minutes) before the Commission, car pooling, protocol followed by the Commission in the conduct of the meeting, and other information you may want to have considered about the rezone proposal.

We look forward to having you and your neighbors (please invite them) attend both January 6 GG meeting and the January 13 BCC meeting.

Phil Reiss, Rezone Committee

TO:  Gulf Gate-Gulf Gate Woods owners, renters and others with an interest in maintaining the current RE-1 zoning (Residential Estate 1.0 units per acre) in lieu of a request to rezone the golf course to RSF-2 (Residential Single Family 3.5 units per acre).

Reason for the meeting: A zoning challenge is a 2 step process. The first step involved having the community prepare for a meeting with the Sarasota Planning Commission. We did that and met with the Commission on October 15, 2009. The Commission found for the Gulf Gate community; that is, the request was not approved.

Now, the second step. It requires preparation for a meeting with the Board of County Commissioners, which is to take place on January 13, 2010. At that time the Commissioners will either grant the rezoning request or deny it. Therefore, a community meeting is planned in advance of the Commissioners' meeting so that we may prepare for it:

WHEN - MONDAY, DECEMBER 7, 2009
TIME - 6:30 PM
LOCATION - GULF GATE LIBRARY, Meeting
Room (adjacent to the Children's section)

You input and support is needed. Plan to attend and support YOUR COMMUNITY.

Gulf Gate Golf Course Update

4/24/09

On April 22, Jim Muir, Phil Reiss and Joan Fridshal met with representatives of the county to discuss the Gulf Gate Golf Course rezoning application submitted to the county on March 27 and currently working its way through the completeness process prior to formal review.

The owner has submitted a plot plan that has already incorporated two of the requests of the Gulf Gate Community Association.  The plot plan as presented at the public meeting last fall that included the demolition of the club house is very similar to the one that has been submitted with the application.  One of the requests of the GGCA was that the exit onto Post Road be moved to Bispham, which has been done.  Another request was that the site plan be binding, that is it cannot be substantially changed without going though another rezoning process.  The owner has voluntarily made the site plan binding.

The GGCA will next be submitting a written documentation of concerns, which will incorporate many of the ideas expressed at the public meeting.  It is anticipated that the meeting before the Planning board will not occur until at least September.  Updates will be posted on the GGCA website as they occur.

The President of GGCA received the following note and wanted to share it with our community:

"We appreciate living in such a great community with great neighbors and a wonderful board. Thank you to all. Happy Holidays and best wishes for the New Year. Whenever we get the newsletter it is another reminder of how fortunate we are to live in this community.
Sincerely,
Kathy Wingate and Rob Goff

The Board of Directors would like to thank Henry Voskowsky for the hard work he did repairing the damaged monument sign on Gulf Gate Drive. Henry is a longtime volunteer for the Gulf Gate community association. Using his creative carpentry skills he was able to create matching letters and matching paint. His time and hard work on behalf of the residents of Gulf Gate are greatly appreciated. Thank you Henry.

The Board Of Directors is pleased to announce that the process of reinstating deed restrictions for Gulf Gate has been completed. Effective July 10, 2008, deed restrictions are  enforceable in Gulf Gate. (Deed restrictions continue to be in place for Gulf Gate Woods). Go to the Deed Restrictions web-page for the complete deed restrictions for your unit.
